Cheerleading should be about having a positive and supportive attitude, school spirit and enthusiasm. No question about that. But there is also a tremendous physical aspect to it. The pages listed above will give you the low-down nitty gritty on the most essential elements that every cheerleader from beginner ankle biters on up to adults should master.
Trying out soon?
If you have never been a cheerleader and don't know what to expect, you can watch videos of kids trying out for various teams, and teams preparing for competition. For online viewing just go to the following website and look for the episodes as numbered: "MADE" (#18, #41, #51, #55, #115). "Cheerleader Nation" and "Cheerleader U." also encapsulate the tryout and competition experience. (A word to the wise, if you are going to be a cheerleader you need to grow a thick skin!! If your coach comes into your house and straightens out a picture frame, would that make you cry? Of course not! And the same should go if (s)he or another team member straightens out your high V, or toe touch, or dance moves. Don't take constructive criticism personally, but please do listen to it and learn from it.)

CNY All Stars Cheer Gym helps its clients train to be stars of the competitive cheerleading circuit. Located near Syracuse's Carousel Center, the CNY Cheer company's 10,300square-foot studio complex is lined with more than 100 trophies, including a dozen for national championships. "All-Star" cheerleading is a competitive sport that involves regional and national competitions. The all-star teams are based in private gyms rather than schools., Central New York is home to several allstar cheerleading teams. Cable television channels such as ESPN2 regularly broadcast competitive cheerleading events. Owner Kathy Penree, a former high school cheerleading coach, started CNY Cheer Co. in 1996 to train cheerleaders to perform the complicated routines used in competitions. The team members practice for several hours per week to prepare for each competition. A professional choreographer develops new moves for the teams before each season. CNY All Stars Cheer Gym was the first all-star gym to open in New York, says Penree. The sport is most popular in states such as Texas, Florida, and California where competitive cheerleading has existed for more than two decades. Some of CNY All Stars' clients also participate on school cheerleading teams in addition to their competitive cheering. Because the team members come from different school districts, many may have never met if they didn't compete. "Some of the best friends here come from 'rival' schools," says Penree. Worlds on ESPN

ESPN2 will air the All-Star Cheerleading and Dance Worlds for the first time on May 31st. This is a tentative date, any changes will be announced through the USASF website
ESPN2 will re-air the All-Star Cheerleading and Dance Worlds on June 8, 2009. This date is also subject to change
