In about 200 years Australia has constructed arguably the best balanced democracy in the world. We have achieved this without civil war, without violence (yes, there were serious law and order issues in the 19th century), without serious social unrest. Racism has never been a big issue here although we had some problems in our early history.
Over the years we have had to tread a careful diplomatic path with our neighbours. For example we have the worlds most populous Muslim nation – Indonesia – right on our doorstep. This relationship has been rocky at times but if other countries, particularly the USA, need to find examples of how to engage successfully with Islamic nations they should first turn to Australia for that example.
I think one of the other great achievements of this country is its very good education system. This, coupled with our multicultural society, has resulted in Australians having a very good understanding of the world we live in. Australians generally take a very keen interest in events and developments in other parts of the world. If you ever watched an Australian TV news report you would see this in practice.
In terms of exports and the like I think we have to be realistic about what can be achieved here. We have a country about the same size as the continental USA with a population of 20 million. Most of the place is fragile desert. The global warming problem will be a difficult one for Australia due to its reliance on coal exports.
Australians are tolerant and respectful of other countries and their people and our political leaders have always displayed this behaviour at home and abroad. We are also low key in our displays of nationalism. It is very rare for our politicians to say “Australia is the greatest country in the world”. The USA has a very bad habit of doing this. To make statements like this is a insult to every other democracy on the planet.
It’s all about building bridges and improving relationships. Anyway, I hope this helps.
Australia is a great example to the world of a successful functioning multicultural Democracy. It has helped the tiny neighboring country of East Timor gain its independence and aided many countries in the Asia-Pacific region. She was involved in both World War I and World War II and helped defeat Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan and also fought alongside the United States in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Exports include agricultural products as well as Iron Ore, LPG and Gold.
We have lots of cows, sheep, wheat, coal, uranium, iron ore, natural gas, rice, sugar, diamonds, sapphires, opals, pearls, most of our seafood goes straight to Asia, abalone, lobsters, we export camels to the Middle East, chickpeas, wine, the list goes on and on.
History wise we’re not that old, but our discovery helped relieve the burden on the English penal system. Our Anzacs also stepped up for WWI, WWII and Vietnam. We’re currently running around Afghanistan and Iraw.
TYUY, Do a bit of research before making such ridiculous statements! And if you are too lazy, just read the comments above yours as they have nicely summed it up for you. Might be time to look out of your own backyard, wherever you are from.
Australia has some of the best people in the world. We could learn alot from the people.
Every country is important to this world.
i don’t think australia is very significant to the global community. its such a small country
